Countdown Week 37 - It’s really Super, Super Bowl (Or

Hey Sport fans - I imagine some of you were among the 100,000,000 or so who enjoyed this past weekend’s American Football match between the Giants of New York and Patriots of the Greater New England Area.

For starters, let me say at no time were my alligences ever anywhere but with the G-men. I am more of a Jets fan when it comes to pro football, but of course I was going to route for the Giants during this game. Lucky for me the Giants have Armani Toomer on the team to balance the Michigan factor of Tom Brady on the Pats (plus Toomer was at Michigan the same time I was)

Of course now that the Big Game is over, there are more important things on the horizon to focus on. I am of course refering to this coming tuesday, when our nation’s attention turns to what matters, BOOBS and PASTRIES! and of course there are all those what do you call them, oh yeah Presidentials Primarys.

Now I am sure most of you are familiar with the Mardi Gras celebrations that take place this week in New Orleans, LA and Mobile, MS among other places. But did you know that in polish enclaces across the midwest its Paczki Day? A Paczki is basically a large sticky sweet donut style pastry made to remove all the items from a home that were not allowed during Lent. (Sugar, eggs, lard, anything sweet and yummy)

So somewhere after your 3rd paczki and before you start throwing beeds or flashing remember to head down to your local polling place and cast a ballot in the primary of your political affliation. The Primary process is what helps determine the voice of a political party. So make yours heard - And pass me a lemon Paczki

To Open or not, that is the Question

So for the past couple of days I have been facing one of the biggest decisions a geek. Its not Star Wars versus Star Trek, or which obscure pop culture reference T shirt to wear under my retro bowling shirt.

It whether or not to to remove your pristine collectible from its packaging.

There are two schools of thought when you collect something. It doesn’t matter what it is, either, Hummel figurines, Civil War memorabilia, 1960’s lunch boxes, anything. There are those who pack up their collections and keep everything very protected, only taking them out to enjoy briefly, privately. Others love to display their collections. About 10 years ago I have a very large Star Wars collection, both vintage and new stuff that I displayed everywhere. And I was the kind of collector that bought two of everything, so I could open one, and have the other kept pristine. I had the unopened figures running as a boarder around the top of the walls my home office, then they spilled into the bedroom. It became too much. for just the boarder and eventually became a whole wall. Then I moved into a smaller place and didn’t bother to put them up in the new place. They are all in storage in my mother’s attic, and with the exception of a random R2D2 or Yoda toy, I really haven’t bought much Star Wars lately, or any other “collectible”toy or figure lately. Not that I haven’t been tempted. The Kingdom Come Green Lantern V figure (Jade) is a pretty figure (actually all of the figures based on Alex Ross’ work are gorgeous) And its not like I don’t still display some toys in my current apartment. (Not like I used to, mind you, Just Jack Knight and Chiana on my Office Shelf, Death on my bookshelf in the living room, R5D4 on my desk)

But the other day while crusing through Midtown Comics on the west side last week, just to pick up my weekly books, I saw it, the Doctor Who Regeneration two pack - NMIB. I took a good long look at it. No, its been a tight month, I budgeted for my books, but this would be an extravagance, not at all necessary. I thought about putting it aside, in my pull, but I would have to put 50% down anyway. Then I remembered. I had a $20.00 credit at the store! suddenly it wasn’t going to cost me any extra to pick it up! So home it came with me. Since then its been just sitting on my dresser. Not displayed in anyway mind you, just sitting there. I have been trying to decide if I should open it up.

1) Doctor Who Regeneration two pack - NMIB 2) Doctor Who Regeneration two pack - Loose

Now if was the David Tennant Doctor in his own costume, with the trench coat, I am sure I would have have him on the shelf, hanging with Chi and K9 at the TARDIS (ok so maybe I have a few other toys about the place here.) But this is a special pack. A quick check of ebay shows its selling around what I would have paid for it, if I hadn’t had the credit (although there is one guy asking $40.00, don’t you think someone selling would do a little market research to see what the going rate is)

I still haven’t decided yet. I think if I was working in an office, I would have them on my desk there, but I am working out of the home office right now. I guess they will continue to sit on the dresser for a few more days collecting dust til I decide.

So… you wanna go get a cup of coffee or something?

I have been thinking about dating a lot lately.

I do date, believe it or not. But I will be honest, my track record when it comes to dating is not stellar. I get good first dates, and then second dates go well - then I get busy with rehearsals, or even worse, leave town for a show and before you know it, its been 6 weeks since I seen her, and she goes and gets married or something. You may have read some of my earlier blogs about some of the women in my (distant) past. And yes, I do intend to write the next letter soon (its coming stop nagging). I just wanted to take this moment to address my dating future

I live in New York City and according someone’s research, there are 81 single men for every 100 women in Manhattan. Women live longer than men so that should explain a part of that gap. There are also more gay men than gay women (about 4 gay men to 1 lesbian) in NYC so the numbers are in flux and hard to quantify.

So by all means I should be able to find someone I would want to date. In fact I would say that I have found lots of women I would like to date, and that is part of the problem, I would like to date a lot of them. I don’t mean jut sex either. I have had sex (really I have) I have had sex with some very attractive, funny, sweet, sexy women (I have to! Stop laughing) I have actually found it easier to find someone to have sex with than it is to find someone who just wants to go out and be goofy with.

But I have all these amazing women in my life, some of them are close friends and some of them are single (and I can’t for the life of me figure out why), And while I enjoy having some of these people in my life casually, I will admit I have thought about asking them out. And while fear of rejection and ruining a good friendship is a factor, it is not the main reason I don’t ask these women out.

Its sad, but the reason I don’t ask many of these women out it socio-economic. A friend told me once, “Women date up, Men date down” Women date men who are more likely to match their lifestyle, while men date women who don’t threaten their masculinity by making more money then they do.

And while I am not threatened by a woman who makes more money than I do, I want to be able to at least go outwith a girl for lunch or drinks and not have to do the math to figure out if I can have the potato skins and another Guiness without making my rent check bounce.

So as with all things, its my inabilty to crack into more lucrative work in theatre or writing that is keeping me from what I want. Yet I keep doing the same thing.

Wow that whole blog to just say - being poor sucks!
